Frequently asked questions

What is agile project management?

Agile project management is a style of project management that focuses on delivering results in short bursts instead of using a linear path. Projects are made of segments called sprints that focus on collaboration, allowing each phase to be tested and refined before moving to the next stage.

In our Graduate Certificate in Project Management program, you’ll explore agile project management as part of your coursework to help you adapt to today’s fast-paced, team-oriented work environment.

What is the critical path in project management?

A critical path in project management is the longest set of steps that will delay the end of the project if any of the tasks within are delayed. In the critical path, each of the steps are dependent on each other — for example, Step A must be completed before Step B can begin, and Step B must be completed before Step C can begin. If Step A is delayed, the entire timeline is delayed.

What are deliverables in project management?

Deliverables are the outcomes or results the project aims to produce. These can be physical products or services depending on the project’s objectives.

What is waterfall project management?

Waterfall project management is a linear approach where each phase — like design, development, and testing — must be completed before the next begins. It works well for projects with clear, fixed requirements but offers less flexibility when changes arise mid-process.

What are the 5 stages of project management?

The 5 stages of project management are:

• Initiation is the beginning of a project. Goals and scope are defined and stakeholders are identified.
• Planning dives deeper into the details of how you're going to achieve your goal. A timeline and plan are created, resources are acquired, and a budget is made.
• Execution is the stage where the meat of the work is done. Your team will follow the plan created in the previous step, changing direction as needed, and meet goals outlined in Initiation.
• Monitoring and control helps to keep the project moving. If there are subgoals, they should be tracked. If there are any issues with budget or the timeline, they should be addressed in this stage.
• Closure is the end of the project. All tasks are completed, deliverables have been sent, and any closing processes have been finished.

How long does it take to earn a project management certificate?
