At DeVry, we know that every student has their own unique needs – and going back to school shouldn’t require a one-size-fits-all approach. That’s why we offer stackable and embedded credentials.

Whether you need to chip away at your education in smaller segments or you’re ready to tackle your highest education goals, we’ve got a solution to meet your needs. Take a look at what it means to pursue stackable credentials or embedded credentials as you follow the journeys of two sample students.

Stackable Credentials Definition

Stackable credentials allow you to move forward on your time. You start by enrolling and completing the lowest level degree or certificate program you are interested in. When you’re ready for the next level, you can apply your previously earned credits toward a related program at DeVry.

Embedded Credentials Definition

Embedded credentials allow you to begin with your end goal in mind. You can enroll in a bachelor’s program, for example, and earn your undergraduate certificate and associate degree along the way. You only enroll once, and credentials are earned once the applicable coursework is completed.

Sam likes networking and wants to grow his skillset. His goal is to add a quick credential to his resume, so he enrolls in an undergraduate certificate program and completes it in 1 year.1

After a while, he’s ready to take the next step in his education. He decides to pursue a related associate degree and applies the qualifying credits he earned in his certificate program toward his associate degree.

After graduating, Sam applies for a related bachelor’s degree program. With qualifying credits from his associate degree, he’s already halfway done! By enrolling in stackable degree and certificate programs, Sam was able to pave the path toward his future one step at a time.

Explore an Embedded Credentials Example

Tori enrolls in a bachelor’s degree program and begins her coursework. After completing the required courses in her curriculum, Tori is awarded an undergraduate certificate.

As she continues working toward her bachelor’s degree, Tori completes the required courses to earn her associate degree. She then completes the remainder of her coursework and earns her bachelor’s degree. Thanks to her embedded program, Tori was able to pursue her bachelor’s degree while earning her undergraduate certificate and associate degree along the way.
