DeVry Enhances Software Development Program to Equip Learners for an AI-Driven Future

BSD updates reflect workforce demand for adaptable, AI-ready tech talent

LISLE, Ill - Sept. 15, 2025 -  Starting in the November 2025 session, DeVry University will launch a redesigned Bachelor of Science in Software Development (BSD) program — with new tracks, AI integration, and restructured certificate offerings that reflect the evolving needs of students and employers.

Rooted in DeVry’s mission to equip learners with tech-forward, career-ready skills, the BSD program updates signal a shift toward a more AI- and security-oriented, ethically grounded software education. As artificial intelligence continues to shape the modern workforce, the updated BSD program aims to position students not only as capable developers, but as agile problem-solvers who can lead in an era of intelligent systems.

“This is not just a program refresh — it’s a reflection of where the world is headed,” said Shantanu Bose, Ph.D., provost and chief academic officer for DeVry University. “We’ve reimagined our software design and engineering, AI and data analytics, and application development tracks to support learners at every stage, whether they’re starting in a tech-forward career or reskilling for relevance in the age of AI.”

What’s Changing

Beginning Oct. 27 —the start of the November 2025 session— DeVry will introduce the restructured BSD curriculum featuring four newly developed tracks:

  • Software Design & Engineering
  • AI & Data Analytics
  • Application Development
  • General Option

These tracks offer enhanced technical coursework with a stronger emphasis on cybersecurity, game development, software product design and use of artificial intelligence — including natural language processing, large language models, generative AI, AI agents and responsible AI application.

In parallel, two of DeVry’s undergraduate certificates in software development will also be updated to better align with market needs:

  • AI & Data Analytics
  • Software Development

Consistent with DeVry’s commitment to stackable learning, these certificates will stack into the bachelor’s in software development degree program.1 Enrollment in the Web and Mobile Application Development certificate will be paused as part of this transition.

Preparing Learners for the AI Era

Though local growth may vary, the employment of software developers is projected to grow nationally 15% from 2024 to 2034 —much faster than the average for all occupations, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

To help learners capitalize on this momentum, DeVry’s updated BSD program is designed to develop not only technical fluency, but hands-on professional and career-relevant skills students can apply immediately.

“What makes this redesign special is the intentional integration of AI into real-world projects,” said Richard Dixon, professor of computer science and network technologies. “Students aren’t just learning how to code — they’re building intelligent systems, analyzing data, and developing the mindset needed to lead in this space.”

Hands-on learning continues to be a cornerstone of DeVry’s approach, with opportunities to build a portfolio of AI-driven projects and learn the concepts to earn industry-recognized certifications, such as CompTIA’s AI Essentials.

“We’re seeing more students who want to pivot into tech without starting from scratch,” added Mohammad Muqri, MD, professor of engineering and data analytics. “Our modular approach, combined with stackable credentials, helps students stay motivated and build relevant skills as they chart their career path.”

A Flexible, Career-Centered Approach

As more working adults seek efficient, skills-focused education aligned with their career goals, DeVry’s BSD update reflects a broader commitment to accessibility and workforce readiness. The program is 100% online with asynchronous classes, 24/7 support, qualifying transfer credit options, and the potential to earn the degree in as little as 2 years and 8 months with an accelerated schedule.2

These enhancements also align with national conversations around reskilling, career mobility, and making education more adaptable to the realities of work shaped by AI.

“DeVry’s software development programs have always been about what comes next,” Bose added. “With these updates, we’re giving learners the tools to lead that future.”
