DOWNERS GROVE, Ill., August 22, 2011
DeVry University's Keller Graduate School of Management announced today that 2010 graduate Kimberly Sushil of Orlando is the 2011 George P. Doherty Award recipient. The prestigious national award was presented to Sushil in recognition of her commitment to education and extensive record of service toward improving literacy in her community. She exemplifies the impressive standards of excellence set forth in the Doherty Award selection criteria.
The George P. Doherty Award was established in 1983 in honor of former president of DeVry Institute George P. Doherty, who joined the Keller Graduate School of Management’s board of directors and advisory council in 1974 and served until he died in 1982. It is presented annually in his memory to an outstanding Keller graduate student who exemplifies the same qualities of leadership and strength in the pursuit of excellence that Doherty exhibited throughout his tenure.
As the first person in her family to receive a bachelor's degree or master's degree, Sushil understands the legacy she is creating among both her relatives and community. She demonstrates her gratitude for the education she has received through service to her community, helping to remove the barriers to literacy for both adults and children.
"Kimberly has made an invaluable donation of time and energy to promote literacy in English for students in Orlando who speak other languages," said Donna Loraine, provost, vice president of academic affairs and dean of Keller Graduate School of Management. "Her work aiding others as they overcome personal difficulties reflects steadfast dedication to education. It offers a preview of the success she is sure to find as she pursues this passion through her career."
While still completing her education, Sushil led a literacy book club program for Miami Valley Child Development Centers Head Start Program. She continues to give back as a volunteer through the Adult Literacy League as an Adult ESOL (English for Students of Other Languages) Literacy Tutor. Sushil is also a member of the Orlando Chapter of the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network.
Beyond her talents in volunteerism, Sushil demonstrates a passion for entrepreneurism, using her gifts to improve and launch programs that benefit others. As a member of the advisory board for First Book-Orlando, which provides books to children living in poverty, she assisted in restructuring the organization and energizing membership. And in January 2006, she successfully launched and operated Fuzzy McButterbooks, an internet bookstore.
Sushil was nominated for this celebrated award by Carol Bull, dean of graduate studies and advisement for the DeVry University Orlando metro. Graduating with a master's degree in Public Administration (MPA), Sushil hopes to continue to build her career in the non-profit world or enter the higher education industry.
