Tuition and Fees
Turn a Cost into an Investment
The college education you pay for now will pay off over and over again during your lifetime. Think of your tuition cost as a career investment.
Of course, that still doesn't change the fact that college can be expensive. DeVry recognizes the increasing costs and strives to make higher education accessible and affordable by doing the following:
- Working closely with students and parents to find as many financial aid options as possible, including scholarships, grants, loans, tuition reimbursement and more
- Offering more than $25 million in annual scholarship awards
- Reducing tuition costs for fulltime students
Understanding Tuition Rates
College tuition and fees can be as confusing as your telephone bill. Colleges charge by the credit hour, by ranges of credit hours, by status or by flat rate. In some cases, colleges have variable rates, depending on the number of credit hours you take. Even after you figure this out, you still may not have a rate you can compare with the rates at other colleges. That's because some colleges charge on a semester hour basis and some charge on a quarter hour basis, while others use such definitions as “non-term” hours, clock-hours or credits. This is why it's very important to get all the details: so you can make an accurate side-by-side comparison of all your college options. Fee structures also vary widely from college to college and are often ignored in calculating your total cost. You'll want to ask each college you are looking at what fees are assessed and how they are determined. In most cases, colleges use fees to more fairly apportion costs that are discretionary and associated with particular courses, programs or enrollment status.
How DeVry Measures Up
Tuition and fees at DeVry are fairly simple. Tuition is charged on a per credit hour basis, with two different rates. Within each semester, hours 1-11 are charged at one credit hour rate; hours 12 and above are charged at a lower rate. And effective in July 2009, the fee structure will be simplified. Miscellaneous fees have been eliminated and a single student services charge will be applied each session (see Student Services charge below).

As for additional expenses, DeVry has:
- Student Services charge – A $20 per session charge covers the cost of miscellaneous fees, software and other technology provided to all students
- Textbooks, Supplies and Specialized Equipment – Site-Based Students: Costs for textbooks and supplies vary by program and typically range from $340 to $970 per semester for full-time students.
- Textbooks, Supplies and Specialized Equipment – Online Students: Costs for textbooks, supplies and any required specialized equipment vary by program and typically range from $220 to $540 per semester for full-time students.
In addition, in the U.S., a $50 application fee ($25 where state law requires) must accompany the application.
Apples to Apples — Understanding Tuition Nuances
Two semesters or three quarters? Eight semesters and 120 semester hours or 12 semesters and 180 quarter hours? How a college slices matters when it comes to tuition. By definition, a student gets 15 weeks or more of instruction time during a semester, and 10 weeks or more during a quarter. In order to accurately compare costs between quarter-hour and semester-hour schools, you will need to convert one school's tuition structure to the other school's tuition structure using one of these formulas:
- Semester to quarter – cost per credit hour x (120/180)
- Quarter to semester – cost per credit hour x (180/120)
For example, let's take DeVry's tuition rate for Chicago-area campuses, which is $550 per credit hour, and determine what the approximate credit hour cost would be if DeVry were on a quarter-hour schedule:
- $550 (credit hour cost per semester) x [120 (number of semester hours)/180 (number of quarter hours)] = $366.66 (credit hour cost per quarter)
This means that the quarter-hour rate for DeVry programs in Chicago is roughly $367. To make an actual comparison, you would need to use actual hours for each program you are considering. For instance, if you are comparing DeVry's BSBA program, which is 124 semester credit hours, with the BA program from ABC University, which is 194 quarter credit hours, you would use the following formula:
- $550 x (124/194) = $351.55
The resulting $351.55 is the quarter-hour rate for the BA program at DeVry (Chicago area). You can then use $351.55 to accurately compare DeVry's tuition rate to another university's rate.
Special Tuition Rate For Military Personnel
U.S. military personnel serving in any of the five branches of the U.S. Armed Forces (including National Guard and Reserves), and their spouses, are eligible for DeVry's military pricing:
- $260 per semester-credit hour for students enrolled in programs other than Electronics and Computer Technology (ECT) at locations that utilize a laptop computer.
- $280 per semester-credit hour for students enrolled in the ECT program.
- $250 per semester-credit hour for all other students eligible for military rates.
The application fee is also waived for these individuals. Textbooks, course materials and other fees are charged at the standard rate. Additional information and requirements are available from DeVry admissions advisors.
