Medical billing and coding is the process of applying specific codes – known as ICD-10-CM codes – to health records and claims, then submitting those claims to the insurance agencies or companies covering the cost of the service. The process might sound simple enough, but there’s a lot more to this growing career field than meets the eye.
When it comes to assigning codes, there’s no shortage of choices. In fact, the current database allows billing and coding professionals to choose from approximately 72,000 procedure codes and 70,000 diagnosis codes when classifying treatments and illnesses.
