2. Determine Your Eligibility for Federal Programs

Review the section below to see if you are eligible to qualify for federal financial assistance. To qualify, you must:

  • Enroll as a degree-seeking student.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or an eligible noncitizen.
  • Make satisfactory academic progress.
  • Not be in default on a federal education loan.
  • Not owe a refund on a federal education grant.
  • Register with selective service (if you are a male born after January 1, 1960, over 18 years of age, and not currently serving in the armed forces).
  • Demonstrate financial need.

3. Determine dependency status

The federal government has established how dependency status is determined for federal financial aid purposes. If a student is considered a dependent, his or her parents' income and asset information must be included on the FAFSA. This information will be used in addition to the student's income and asset information to determine the Expected Family Contribution (EFC).

The following questions will determine if you are an independent or dependent student.

  • Were your born before January 1, 1988?
  • At the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year, will you be working on a master's or doctorate program?
  • As of today, are you married?
  • Do you have children who receive more than half of their support from you between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012?
  • Do you have a dependent (other than your children or spouse) who lives with you and who receives more than half of their support from you, now and through June 30, 2012?
  • Are you a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces?
  • Are you currently serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces for purposes other than training?
  • When you were age 13 or older, were both your parents deceased, were you in foster care or were you a dependent/ward of the court?
  • As of today, are you an emancipated minor in legal guardianship as determined by a court in your state of legal residence?
  • At any time on or after July 1, 2010, were you an unaccompanied youth who was homeless or at risk of becoming homeless?

If you answered Yes to ANY of these questions, you are independent and do not need to include your parents' financial information on the FAFSA.

If you answered No to ALL of these questions, you are dependent and must include your parents' financial information on the FAFSA as well.

4. Collect financial documents and complete the FAFSA Worksheet

The FAFSA Worksheet is designed to help prepare you for the completion of the FAFSA on the Web.
