Our concentration in Higher Education Leadership can help you become a frontrunner in a variety of exciting careers, including Director of Academic Services, Dean of Student Services or School President. Aided by the fundamental tools and understanding you can gain by earning this degree, you can effectively shape the future of higher education leadership.

Careers in education leadership are rapidly growing and stand to increase in the coming years. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of postsecondary education administrators will grow by 19% percent from 2010-2020. 1

Professional Responsibilities


Earning your Master of Science in Education degree can prepare you to teach in a variety of non-certificated higher education areas or in higher education administration or related positions. Your professional responsibilities may include:

  • Developing and managing all aspects of enrollment, record keeping, transcripts, student handbook, campus catalog(s), calendars, schedules, software system functionality and any other academic operating tools.
  • Facilitating admissions, career development, and counseling services. Organizing meetings to review and direct school policies, testing procedures, and ensures compliance with state laws and rules. Chairing and participating in committees of a college.
  • Designing, developing and delivering programs for college and university presidents and other senior level campus leaders. Organizing  periodic focus groups and roundtables of campus leaders, association representatives, foundation staff and higher education scholars to identify emerging trends and issues that affect institutional governance, management and effectiveness.
  • Providing leadership and strategic direction for a college, overseeing critical policy and advocacy efforts. Responsible for creating a vision for day-to-day operations, working with the executive board on fiscal efforts, and promoting a college’s reputation on a local, state and national level.

DeVry University graduates with this concentration could be prepared for careers such as:

  • Dean of Student Services, who serves a variety of functions including admissions, career development, and counseling services. They facilitate meetings to review and direct school policies, testing procedures, and ensure compliance with state laws and rules.  They may chair and participate in committees of a college.
  • Director, Executive Leadership Group, who works closely with members of the executive leadership team to design, develop, and deliver programs for college and university presidents and other senior level campus leaders. They also design and convene periodic focus groups and roundtables of campus leaders, association representatives, foundation staff and higher education scholars to identify emerging trends and issues that affect institutional governance, management and effectiveness.
  • School President, who provides leadership and strategic direction for a college, overseeing its critical policy and advocacy efforts. They are responsible for creating a vision for day-to-day operations and working with the executive board to ensure that a college continues to be fiscally sound.
