Celebrating 90 Years: DeVry's Legacy of Innovation

Our founder, Dr. Herman DeVry, had a vision. In the early 1900s he was ahead of his time, innovating and using technology in a way it had never been used before. He could see there was a specific need for a versatile electronic device that would bring movies out of the theater and into businesses, homes and even classrooms. So, he worked hard on a concept of a portable movie projector, earning several patents and advancing technology early in the motion picture industry.

But he didn’t stop there. He recognized his portable projector could also impact the lives of students and teachers, so he teamed up with another creative mind, Dr. Lee DeForest, inventor of the vacuum tube, who agreed that visual learning could advance education – and change the world. So, in 1931, they established De Forest’s Training, Inc., a DeVry School, in Chicago.

In 1953, DeForest Training School became the DeVry Institute of Technology, and ultimately merged with Keller Graduate School in 2002 to become DeVry University. To this day, Dr. DeVry’s curiosity, inventive spirit and real-world problem-solving continues throughout DeVry.

Over the years, we’ve evolved and adapted to the changing trends in the marketplace. Today, we offer undergraduate and graduate degree programs online and at more than 40 locations nationwide in five areas of study: Business and Management, Engineering and Information Sciences, Health Sciences, Liberal Arts, and Media Arts and Technology.
