Academic Quality at DeVry University

DeVry University has a long history of providing quality, integrity, and innovation in higher education. We have helped students earn associate, bachelor's, and master's degrees in a variety of in-demand fields for over 80 years. With more than a quarter-million alumni, we are proud to be one of the largest private, degree-granting, regionally accredited higher education systems in North America.

The DeVry University Academic Annual Report

For decades, DeVry University has publicly reported the rates at which our students graduate and become employed in their chosen fields. We also publish the DeVry University Academic Annual Report, which reflects our commitment to provide a thorough and straightforward overview of our academic initiatives and progress.

The report confirms our high standards, our academic quality, and our student-centered approach to education. It also presents opportunities for improvement as we strive to attain the highest standards possible for all our students. We hold ourselves accountable for defining and measuring academic quality through the following five tenets:

  • Tenet 1: Advances in Curriculum and Innovation
    Technology shapes our interactions with the world and in the classroom. This tenet shares how we explore ways to advance our curriculum; its name reflects our constant evaluation of the newest pedagogies and technologies as tools to deliver world-class learning experiences to our students.

  • Tenet 2: Student Learning Outcomes and Experience
    We want our students to succeed academically and also to become leaders in the workforce who can inspire change and who have a worldview. This tenet highlights our work to incorporate experiential learning and connections to industry into the educational process as a way of setting students on paths of self-discovery and helping them develop skills that employers seek in the workforce.

  • Tenet 3: Faculty Development and Engagement
    Faculty members are at the heart of our institution, and they often engage in meaningful activities that have impact in their fields and in the classroom. This tenet highlights how faculty members engage with students; collaborate with each other and their larger academic communities; and connect with the world around them.

  • Tenet 4: Student Degree Completion and Support
    Providing our students with the personal and academic support they need is essential to helping them complete their programs. This new tenet name highlights how we adapt and customize levels of support to help students reach their goals.

  • Tenet 5: Student Engagement to Graduation and Beyond
    Graduation day is a significant milestone for our students – but because we are a career-focused university, it is simply the beginning of a new chapter in our relationship with them. This tenet notes our engagement with alumni and our ability to provide them with ongoing support.

Following is a summary of highlights from our 2013-2014 comprehensive report.

Academic Quality Highlights
To drive progress in key areas of academic importance, DeVry University participates in the Higher Learning Commission’s Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP). Through AQIP, the university focuses on targeted action projects, which in 2013–2014 included furthering development of the university’s honors program, evolving its faculty model to influence student learning outcomes and improving the tracking of faculty members’ academic accomplishments.

The report explains how DeVry University looks outward to study and implement best practices in higher education through its participation in the Higher Learning Commission’s Academy of Student Persistence and Completion. The university was one of 13 institutions accepted into the academy’s first cohort. Through this collaborative four-year program, DeVry University is working with peer institutions to implement efforts that will help students reach their academic goals.

Additional Improvements
The 2013–2014 report spotlights many additional improvement efforts intended to enhance the student experience, including:

  • Increasing first-time, full-time student retention through year-over-year continuous improvement efforts, with 55 percent of bachelor's degree-seeking students retained between 2012-2013, as compared to 50 percent reported for 2011-2012.

  • Helping students manage their finances with a new web-based tool called Manage My Loans. Students can view their academic progression in relationship to their aggregate loan limits and see the impact borrowing decisions have on their loan repayment.

  • Supporting continuing education by launching three complimentary Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), in the subjects of career development, cybersecurity and financial analysis.

  • Creating a student-centric scheduling tool to streamline students’ graduation path by providing the courses they need, when they need them and in the right modality.

Throughout the report, special attention is noted where the university is working to close the skills gap between education and workforce needs, and helping students complete their degree programs.
